Congratulations to the Girls Cross Country team who placed 5th at the New England Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester, CT this past weekend. This finish is the highest a THS Cross Country has ever placed at this meet. For perspective, there are over 430 high school teams in the region - that puts us in the top 1%. The team was led by Senior Ally Zaffina, who earned All-New England honors, with contributions from Emily Alexandru, Kali Holden, Evelyn Marchand, Rebecca Margolnick, Megan Becker, and Kiki Grant. The teams combined time shattered the old school record for ‘combined team time’ by over 1 minute and 30 seconds. The girls will now prepare to run as a team at the Nike Northeast Regional Championship on Saturday, November 30th, in Wappinger Falls New York, as well as send some individual runners to the Foot Locker Regional Championship at Van Cortland Park on the same day. Good luck to all!
Congratulations to the FCIAC Champion boys soccer team!!!! They beat Fairfield Warde tonight in the rain 1-0 in front of a large and very enthusiastic crowd. The game winner was scored by Tiago Frazao and assisted by Justin Hotvath. Nick Grassi made 9 saves, 6 in the 2nd half to preserve the shutout. Their record improved to 13-2-4. They are FCIAC Champs for the second consecutive season and third time in four years. Great job!!!!!
Congratulations to the Trumbull Girls swim and dive team for their performance at FCIAC Finals on Tuesday. The team had a finalist in almost every event. The 200 medley relay team of Mia Zajac, Lauren Walsh, Ashleigh Piro, and Julia Nevins took first place! A major shout out to Sophomore Lauren Walsh who was awarded the “most outstanding swimmer in the FCIAC” for earning the most points overall in the conference. Congratulations also to Katelyn Cerulli for once again breaking her own championship diving record (and attaining All-FCIAC honors) with a score of 420.30 at Monday's FCIAC meet.
Congratulations to the Girls Cross Country team who were the Runner Up at the Class LL State Championship this past Saturday. 115 teams ran the course at Wickham Park and our girls ran the 3rd fastest team time of the day. They were led by senior, Ally Zaffina who earned All-State honors for the 3rd time in her High School career. The team will compete next at the State Open Championship this Friday. Well done ladies on this tremendous accomplishment and good luck.
The Fairfield County Sports Commission had their yearly banquet last night. Two Trumbull athletes were recognized. Andy Ilie was awarded the Trumbull Sportsperson of the Year Award for his accomplishments on the tennis court - last year winning both the LL and State Open Championships. In addition, Pat Dufficy - class of '79, was inducted into the Fairfield County Sports Commision Hall of Fame for her outstanding performance as both a basketball and softball player. Pat played basketball at Trumbull High School and received a scholarship to play basketball at the University of South Carolina. After college, she played professional softball for 17 years and established herself as one of the best softball players in the country. Pat is also a member of the National Softball Hall of Fame.
The Trumbull High School Girls Cross Country team traveled to the Orlando area this past weekend to compete in the 23rd Disney Cross Country Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. The Eagles, who are the 2019 FCIAC West Division champs and currently ranked 3rd in the state (according to coaching polls), continued their winning ways in more ways than one. On the course, the Varsity girls were the champions of the Large School Division race as runners: Emily Alexandru, Kali Holden, and Alessandra Zaffina were 2nd, 3rd and 4th overall, respectively. The JV team placed 3rd as a team in their division led by Erianna Gentile. Off the course, the girls volunteered for an afternoon and evening at the Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, FL. The Village hosts children with critical illness and their families while they are in Florida. Many families from Connecticut have been there with their families through Make-A-Wish Connecticut. Coach Jim McCaffrey, whose family are alumni at the village, wanted to share the village with the team and provide them an opportunity to give back. The girls learned about the philanthropic mission of the Village, they toured the grounds, interacted with guests, and they provided dinner service in the cafeteria at the village. They served food, prepared salads, carried trays, bused tables, washed dishes, and shared smiles with the guests. Their actions for the entirety of the trip were a demonstration of the quality of character this town and this school system instill. They make Trumbull proud.
I hope everyone is enjoying summer! There are some changes for the 2019-2020 school year that I want to make you aware of to allow you some time to plan. The Board of Education recently approved a budget for the upcoming school year. One change moving forward is that the Pay to Participate fee has been increased to $165.00 per season with the exception of Ice Hockey which will be $365.00. The family cap will be $495.00 (+ $200 for every ice hockey player). In addition, this year the Pay to Participate fee will need to be paid in advance of try-outs. Payment can be made online via credit card at trumbullathletics.com when you register or paid in person with cash or check with Mrs. Haslam. Athletes not making a team will be reimbursed promptly after try-outs. If you have already made an $80.00 payment for a Fall sport, Mrs. Haslam has adjusted your account to reflect that initial payment. People requesting a fee waiver from the Superintendent need to do so prior to try-outs. The Waiver Request Form can be downloaded from the trumbullathletics.com website.
Please let me know if you have any questions and enjoy your summer.
